Table of contents
There are a wide variety of brands and mattress types that claim to be the best mattress for side sleepers, however you need to be aware that the type of mattress you purchase will have a great impact on how you sleep at night and will determine whether you wake up in the morning feeling completely refreshed or like you just went a round with Mike Tyson.
To help find the most suitable mattress, we first need to understand the problems that side sleepers face when trying to get comfortable in bed. When sleeping on your side, you are putting a significant amount of weight and pressure on to your hips and shoulders which can cause tremendous pain and discomfort if your mattress does not conform and counter-balance these parts of your body. To alleviate this issue, you need to look for mattresses which focus on reducing pressure points, alleviating pain relief and conforming to the bodies natural contour. Let’s take a closer look at what we need to consider:
As we’ve just briefly discussed, side sleepers typically put significantly more pressure on just one side of the body. The areas
where pressure is most significant (hips and shoulders) are referred to as the ‘pressure points’ as these have the greatest chance of being damaged.
If you take a look at the diagram on the right, you can see the various pressure points for side sleepers (middle illustration). The purpose of the mattress is to reduce these pressure points by spreading your body weight across the entire mattress.
The best types of mattress for reducing pressure points are memory foam & latex mattresses, several of which we have recommended in our table above.
We’ve talked about relieving pressure points, but what we haven’t mentioned is supporting the spine, neck and back in alignment. For side sleepers this is critically important as your spine may already be misaligned. When looking for a new mattress, it’s important to look for one which can contour to the bodies natural shape. Once again, the best type of mattresses for this are memory foam mattresses. However latex mattresses and well-designed innerspring mattresses can also be effective.
The firmness of a mattress is incredibly important it’s vital that the mattress is not too soft and also not too firm. A mattress that is too soft would mean that your body would sink into it rather than the mattress contouring to the bodies natural shape or spreading your weight across the mattress. Similarly, a mattress which is too firm would provide absolutely zero support at all as it would not contour, nor would it relieve pressure points, it would actually make your sleeping experience significantly worse.
The ideal mattress firmness for a side sleeper is a medium to soft mattress – this will allow your body to be absorbed by the mattress enough for it to help relieve pressure points, while supporting any shift in weight during the night.
Best Mattress Types for Side Sleepers
We’ve mentioned a few mattress types above, well now we’re going to delve deeper in to which mattress types are best for side sleepers. Firstly, what types of mattresses are there – Spring, Memory Foam & Latex; there are a few others but not really worth mentioning for this guide.
The spring mattress is one of the oldest and the most popular type of mattress currently on the market today. During the past several years the innerspring mattress has developed significantly going from the old style row of coils to now having each coil individually enclosed which helps prevent the coils from popping out of the mattress after years of wear and tear. As well as this most innerspring mattresses now come with additional layers of material, typically memory foam or latex which provide additional comfort.
Pros: As the most popular type of mattress on the market, there is a wide range of mattresses to choose from. They range in firmness, thickness, size and price, and there are preferences to suit almost everyone.
Cons: Unfortunately, with such a high market demand there really is no correlation between price and comfort, we’d suggest going with a mid-range priced mattress.
Side Sleeper recommendations: We do not recommend spring mattresses for side sleepers, while coil mattresses have become significantly better in recent years, especially with the innovation of including layers of memory foam or latex to help maximise comfort they simply do not provide enough pressure relief for side sleepers.
Our recommendation: Signature Sleep 8 Inch Contour Memory Foam & Innerspring Mattress with 72% of consumers rating this as a 5-star mattress and more than 5,750 verified consumers giving it a user rating of 9.0 out of 10.
This is one of the fastest growing mattress types in the market and with good reason. Originally developed for NASA, memory foam has become a massive commercial success and is featured in a large variety of household goods including mattresses, mattress toppers, and pillows.
These mattresses are made up of multiple layers of high-density foam that react to the weight and temperature of a user; they are well-known for their comfort because they contour to the unique shape of your body and relieve pressure points while providing excellent pain relief for those who suffer from pain while sleeping. You can read more about memory foam mattresses right here.
Pros: By moulding to the natural shape of your body, memory foam reduces pressure points and helps to relieve pain, it also absorbs movement which helps to reduce the disruption when tossing and turning.
Cons: The two most common complaints about memory foam mattresses is that they make users too hot since they mould to the body they are capable of retaining heat. Secondly, when purchased, they emit a chemical odor for the first 24-72 hours which can be unpleasant.
Side Sleeper recommendations: We do recommend memory foam mattresses for side sleepers, they are one of the best-suited mattress types with their ability to cradle a users body and contour to the natural body line and provide additional support to the areas which need it such as the shoulders and hips.
Our recommendation: Sleep Innovations Shiloh 12 Inch memory foam mattress with 72% of consumers rating this as a 5-star mattress and more than 3,500 verified consumers giving it a user rating of 8.8 out of 10.
These mattresses are widely known to be one of the best types of mattress for back pain. They’re also extremely popular for people with allergies since they use hypoallergenic materials, they are considered to be one of the most eco-friendly mattress types on the market.
Latex mattresses are often made from organic (natural) or synthetic (man-made) rubber and are quite often blended with other materials such as Visco foam to help create a more comfortable mattress.
Pros: They are extremely supportive and very firm, they act very similar to memory foam however unlike memory foam they do not cause heat retention issues.
Cons: As they are firm mattresses, if you prefer a less firm mattress then latex is probably not the best choice for you.
Side Sleeper recommendations: We do recommend latex mattresses for side sleepers, similarly to memory foam mattresses they provide excellent support for side sleepers in reducing pressure points.
Our recommendations: DreamFoam Ultimate Dreams Latex Mattress with 71% of consumers rating this as a 5-star mattress and more than 500 verified consumers giving it a user rating of 8.4 out of 10.
Each of these mattresses is ideal for those who prefer to sleep on their sides, and most are available in a variety of sizes from a bunk bed, to twin, to queen and king size. They also represent a wide range in pricing from inexpensive, to somewhat pricey, so there is something here for every budget.
If you are looking for a mattress that will last you for the next couple of decades, many of these mattresses have up to 30-year warranties and have active charcoal-infused particles that will keep the mattress fresh and looking good for many years. Since you will be spending a large percentage of your life sleeping, shouldn’t you have a mattress that will help you get the best possible sleep experience? That experience will help you to have better health, and enjoy your life to the fullest. So use this guide to help you make the choice that is best for you and your family.
